Boston College senior Joe Martinez struck out 10 batters in his second complete game of the season, but the Eagles dropped the second game of Saturday's doubleheader in Brockton, Mass. to Notre Dame, 3-2.
Martinez (4-2) scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned run in his nine innings of work. The righthander has struck out 10 or more batters three times this season. Martinez leads BC with 57 strikeouts and 48.0 innings pitched. He has a 3.00 ERA this season.
The Fighting Irish (15-14, 4-4) jumped on the board first, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the second.
BC (20-8, 7-2) answered back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Senior center fielder Drew Locke led off with a single up the middle. Locke proceeded to steal second and advance to third on a throwing error by Notre Dame catcher Sean Gaston. Shawn McGill hit a sharp ground ball to second to knock in Locke and cut Notre Dame's lead in half.
BC tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on three consecutive singles by Mike Flynn, Jonny Weiss and Robert Dittrich.
The Irish scored the game's decisive run in the top of the fifth on Matt Edwards' groundout to third base that scored Danny Dressman.
Locke was 2-for-4 in the loss and third baseman Jared Mcguire, who was 4-for-4 with three stolen bases in BC's 8-2 victory in game one, was 1-for-3 and has now hit safely in 23 of 28 games this season.
The Eagles and Irish return to Campanelli Stadium on Sunday at 12 p.m. for the rubber match of the three-game series.
