Softball Sweeps Connecticut In BIG EAST Opener

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball team swept a BIG EAST doubleheader from Connecticut Wednesday afternoon at Shea Field on the campus of Boston College. In its conference opener, the Eagles topped the Huskies, 4-1 in both games With the wins, BC is 12-12 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST. The Huskies fall to 8-16 overall (1-5 BIG EAST).
In the first game, Boston College broke open a scoreless game with all four of its runs in the sixth inning. Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) led off with a home run and BC pushed three more runs across on a Connecticut error and RBI hits by Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) and Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.). Obrest knocked in a pair of runs with a hard double to right center.
Daly collected the win on the mound, striking out three while walking just one and giving up eight hits and a run. She would get the win in game two as well, going seven innings, striking out three, and walking nobody. Daly threw a one-hitter in the second game, en route to improving to 6-4 on the season.
In game two, BC scored four runs in the first inning and hung on for the win, despite allowing a single run in the fifth. A lead-off walk by Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) was followed by a Husky fielding error that allowed Angela Pandolfo (Reading, Mass.) to reach and Hopkin to advance to second. Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt and the two scored on an Obrest single to right field. Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) followed with a two-run home run to right center for the 4-0 lead.
The Eagles gave up a run in the fifth inning, but made several key defensive plays to take the 4-1 victory. Obrest led the BC offensive attack with a 2-for-6 effort and four RBI on the afternoon. Six different Eagles pounded out a hit on the afternoon.
Boston College will continue BIG EAST play this weekend, traveling to Seton Hall (Saturday) and St. John's (Sunday) for doubleheaders slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. each day. The Eagles will return home for a non-conference doubleheader against Harvard on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
