CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The Boston College softball team split a BIG EAST doubleheader with Providence Tuesday afternoon at Shea Field. The Friars posted a 2-0 shutout win in game one, but the Eagles stormed back for a 6-4 win in the night cap, giving seniors Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) and Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) reason to celebrate on their senior day. With the split, the Eagles are 17-21 on the season and 5-7 in the BIG EAST. Providence is 31-16 overall (5-9 BIG EAST).
In the first game, Providence posted single runs in each of the first and fourth innings for the final 2-0 margin. The Friars opened the game with a single, walk, and a one-out RBI single to take a quick 1-0 lead. They added an insurance run in the fourth on a leadoff home run. The Eagles collected just four hits and left four runners on base.
In the second game, the Boston College bats were much more active as they pounded out 10 hits en route to scoring their six runs. The Eagles opened the scoring in the second inning as Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) belted a two-out double and later scored on an RBI single by Amanda Booth (Riverside, Calif.). The Eagles added two more runs in the third inning, once again doing the damage with two outs. Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) smashed a single and scored on an Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) double to make it 3-0.
Providence manufactured a pair of runs in fourth inning to tie the game at two, but it didn't last for long as BC got those two runs back in its half of the same inning. With one out, Macchi belted her second hit of the game. Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) followed with a single to right that moved Macchi to third base. With Carley McNary (Norton, Mass.) at the plate, the Eagles tried a suicide squeeze that plated Macchi on a passed ball and scored Angela Pandolfo (Reading, Mass.), who pinch ran for Ferrero, on a throwing error by the catcher.
The Eagles added two more insurance runs in the fifth as Daly doubled to left center and scored as Macchi's fielder's choice was erroneously played by Providence. Macchi then scored on a McNary single for the 6-2 Eagle led.
Providnce got two of those runs back on a two-run homerun in the sixth inning, but BC's defense behind Thompson and Daly held on for the win. Thompson picked up the win in the circle, going 5.2 innings. Daly picked up a save for her 1.1 innings of relief work.
Hopkin (2-for-4) and Macchi (2-for-3) both had multiple-hit games while four different Eagles (McNary, Obrest, Macchi, Booth) collected an RBI.
Boston College will travel to Notre Dame (Friday) and Pittsburgh (Sunday) this weekend.
