Softball Splits Marathon Doubleheader With Villanova

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The Boston College softball team split a BIG EAST doubleheader with Villanova Sunday afternoon at Shea Field. The Wildcats won the first game, 6-5 in 10 innings, while the Eagles bounced back to take the second 10-inning contest, 4-3. With the split, the Eagles are 16-20 on the season and 4-6 in the BIG EAST. Villanova is 32-22 overall and 6-8 in the BIG EAST.
In the first game, both teams combined for eight homeruns that accounted for 10 of the 11 total runs scored. Villanova opened the first inning with a leadoff single and two-run homer to take a quick 2-0 lead. BC cut the lead in half when Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) belted a solo homerun in the second inning. Villanova went up 4-1 with a pair of homers in the third inning and added another solo shot in the fifth for a 5-1 lead. Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) belted a three-run homer in the fifth to make it 5-4 and Obrest tied the game at five with her second homerun of the game in the sixth inning. Villanova won the game with a single run in the ninth, manufactured from a single, sacrifice bunt, ground out that moved the runner to third, and RBI single.
In the second game, Villanova struck first once again. The Wildcats smacked two hits in the first, pushing across a run. The Eagles tied it in the fifth on an RBI single by Amanda Booth (Riverside, Calif.) that plated Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) who reached on a fielder's choice. After Villanova scored a pair in the seventh on a two-run homerun, BC struck back in the bottom of the same inning. Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) belted a two-run homer to tie the game. The Eagles won in the bottom of the tenth when Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.) smacked a double to right center that plated Carley McNary (Norton, Mass.) who led off with a single.
Thompson collected the win in the circle, striking out five en route to improving to 8-7 on the season.
Boston College will close out the home portion of its regular season schedule with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader against Providence Tuesday. It will mark Senior Day for Michelle Daly and Lisa Field.
