Boston College and Maine combined for 34 hits and 25 runs in a game that lasted 3 hours and 25 minutes on Friday afternoon at Shea Field. The Black Bears held on for a 13-12 win between New England's top-ranked teams.
Maine (20-10) jumped on the board early with two runs in the top of the first. The Black Bears chased BC starting pitcher Ted Ratliff in the third and scored three more runs to take a 5-0 lead.
The Eagles (24-13) scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut Maine's lead to one. Sophomore Jared Mcguire ripped a one-out double down the left field line and senior Jason Delaney blasted a two-run home run to left center to make the score 5-2. It was Delaney's sixth home run of the season and second in as many days.
Junior Shawn McGill reached on a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Shortstop Marco Albano drove a single through the right side to knock in McGill and senior Dave Preziosi singled through the right side to advance Albano to second. Preziosi and Albano executed a double steal and Albano scored on an errant throw by catcher Matt McGraw.
Maine answered back in the top of the fifth, sending 12 hitters to the plate and scoring eight runs on eight hits to take a 13-4 lead. Boston College freshman Steven Cadoret made his collegiate debut, surrendering five hits in the inning.
The Eagles continued the offensive marathon by sending 11 hitters to the plate and scoring five runs on six hits in the bottom of the inning. Albano had a two-run double during the rally to go along with RBI singles from McGuire, McGill and freshman catcher Jett Ruiz.
Sophomore Ryne Reynoso entered the game in the top of the sixth and retired the side in order. Reynoso, normally an outfielder, was impressive in the first pitching appearance of his career, tossing 1.2 shutout innings.
BC scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Maine lead to 13-12. After McGuire reached on an error, Delaney doubled to left to put runners on second and third. McGill knocked in McGuire on a groundout to second and Delaney scored on a hard single by Albano that ricocheted off pitcher John Tesseyman. Albano later scored on an RBI single by Preziosi.
Maine's Scott Robinson allowed just one hit over the game's final three innings while picking up his fourth save of the season.
Albano was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. The senior also threw two innings of scoreless relief for BC.
