Sophomore Nick Asselin didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and struck out five in 6.1 innings of work, earning his first career victory while leading Boston College over Massachusetts, 8-6, in the Beanpot consolation game at Fenway Park on Thursday afternoon.
Neither team had a hit until Boston College center fielder Drew Locke singled to shortstop to lead off the top of the fourth inning. After Jared Mcguire popped up, senior Jason Delaney reached on an infield single and catcher Shawn McGill knocked in the first run of the day with a line-drive single to center. Mike Flynn followed with a single to center to load the bases, and after shortstop Marco Albano struck out, Ryne Reynoso drew a walk to plate BC's second run of the inning.
With the bases still loaded, freshman second baseman Jonny Weiss drove a single to center field, scoring Flynn and McGill, and giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
Flynn's RBI double in the fifth and Weiss' sixth-inning sacrifice fly gave the Eagles a 6-1 lead.
The Minutemen (5-22) answered with four runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth. Second baseman Anthony Santos led off with a single to center field and after Asselin struck out the next batter, first baseman Bill Rankin reached on a fielding error by Weiss. Jason Twomley drew a walk to load the bases and after Bryan Adamski grounded out to second to knock in Rankin, Bryan Garrity ripped a two-run single to right center to cut BC's lead to one.
UMass threatened again in the seventh, putting runners on first and second and chasing Asselin from the game. First baseman Dave Preziosi came in to pitch and stuck out two left-handed hitters to end the inning.
Delaney gave the Eagles (24-12) a cushion in the eighth when he blasted a two-run home run over the Green Monster in left. The senior was 3-for-4 on the day.
The home run was Delaney's second in as many games at Fenway. The left fielder also homered over the Monster while participating in the NEIBA all-star game last season.
The Boston College pitchers struck out 10 batters on the afternoon. It is the 17th time this season the pitching staff has posted 10 or more strikeouts.
Sophomore Kevin Boggan worked the final two innings for his third save of the season.
BC improves to 3-0-1 in Beanpot consolation games. The Eagles will host Maine tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 on Shea Field in a showdown between New England's top two teams.
