Freshman Terry Doyle struck out 10 batters in a career-high seven innings of work as Boston College shut out Harvard, 6-0, at O'Donnell Field on a frigid Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles scored five runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. After catcher Shawn McGill was hit by a pitch with one out, senior Mike Flynn hit a low line drive that got past diving right fielder Jeff Friedman for a double. Sophomore Ryne Reynoso proceeded to hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored McGill and gave BC a 2-0 lead. Flynn advanced to third on the throw to the plate.
Freshman Jonny Weiss grounded to shortstop Morgan Brown who threw the ball away, allowing Flynn to cross the plate and Weiss to advance to second. The freshman moved to third on a balk by Brad Unger and after Dave Preziosi walked, Weiss scored on a passed ball to make the score 4-0.
Senior Tom Mackor stroked a line drive single to center that plated Preziosi and then scored on sophomore Jared Mcguire's triple to deep center field.
The Eagles (21-9) scored their first run in the top of the first inning. Preziosi led off with a walk and on a textbook hit-and-run, advanced to third on Mackor's line drive single through the right side. McGuire hit into a double play, just his second of the year, and Preziosi came home to score.
Harvard (14-9) threatened to answer in the bottom half of the first as Doyle hit leadoff hitter Matt Vance and after striking out the next batter, walked two consecutive hitters to load the bases. Doyle struck out the last two hitters of the inning to strike out the side and left three Harvard runners on base.
Sophomore Kevin Boggan came in to work the final two innings for Boston College and struck out three of the six batters he faced. Boggan has seen action out of the bullpen in 15 of BC's 30 games and lowered his ERA to 2.33.
McGuire was 2-for-4 and raised his Big East-leading batting average to .434.
Boston College will play its first game at Shea Field on Thursday when it hosts Hartford at 3:30 p.m.
