Senior Joe Martinez surrendered just four hits while striking out a career-high 11 batters in six innings of work as Boston College defeated Temple, 10-0, on Sunday afternoon. It was the second shutout of the day for the BC pitching staff, which didn't surrender any runs in a 17-0 win over La Salle earlier on Sunday.
BC scored all of its runs in the first two innings, recording nine of its 14 hits during the span.
Third baseman Jared Mcguire continued his torrid day for the Eagles (2-4), going 3-for-4 with two RBI. McGuire had five hits in the win over La Salle and hit his first home run of the year in the bottom of the first inning against Temple. Senior co-captain Jason Delaney also went 3-for-4, and belted his first home run of the season in the four-run second.
After Dave Preziosi led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, stole two bases and scored on an error, Drew Locke started another rally with a one-out double. Delaney then doubled to right center, knocking in Locke. McGuire belted a two-run homer to give the Eagles a quick 4-0 lead.
The Eagles batted around in the top of the first and did it again in the second. After Preziosi singled and was caught stealing at second, Robert Dittrich and Locke were hit by pitches to put runners on first and second. Delaney went on to hit a three-run homer to give the Eagles a 9-0 advantage.
Right fielder Ryne Reynoso had two hits and one run scored for the Eagles while Preziosi went 3-for-4 in his leadoff spot.
Kevin Boggan, Terry Doyle and Nick Asselin each threw a scoreless inning in relief of Martinez and preserved the shutout.
The Eagles will take on the Owls again on Monday in Boca Raton, Fla. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
