Boston College scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead in the second game of a doubleheader against West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va. on Thursday. The Eagles never relinquished the lead and held on to win 7-4. BC won the first game 7-2 and has now won 13 of its last 14 games.
Senior Jason Delaney led off the fourth-inning rally with a double to right center. Catcher Shawn McGill proceeded to score Delaney on a single up the middle and gave BC its first run of the game. McGill later scored on Marco Albano's groundout to tie the score. BC took advantage of three West Virginia errors in the inning to score three more runs.
The Mountaineers scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the bottom of the fifth, but senior righthander Joe Martinez shut them down from that point on. Martinez (4-1) scattered five hits and allowed three earned runs in seven innings of work. He struck out seven batters and is tied with Mike Wlodarczyk for the team lead in wins.
The Eagles (13-5, 2-0) scored two insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning. Sophomore Kevin Boggan earned his second save with two innings of scoreless work.
Senior Dave Preziosi extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a first-inning bunt single.
Boston College returns to action on Saturday when it heads to Jamaica, N.Y. to take on Big East rival St. John's in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
