CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Stephen Gionta and sophomore Pat Gannon each netted one goal to lead sixth-ranked Boston College to a 2-1 Hockey East victory over Boston University before a sellout crowd of 7,884 in Kelley Rink.
BC sophomore goalie Cory Schneider earned his seventh win of the season, making 28 saves. The host Eagles have now allowed two goals or fewer in seven of 11 games.
After a scoreless first period, the Eagles capitalized on a two-man advantage, with Gionta finding the back of the net at 4:47. BC (7-3-1, 6-1-1 Hockey East) doubled its lead less than three minutes later - at 7:12 - when a diving Gannon tipped the rebound of a Matt Greene shot past BU netminder John Curry.
BU freshman John McCarthy's first collegiate goal trimmed the margin to 2-1 at 10:44 of the third period, but BC's Schneider stopped the visitors' final six shots of the game.
BU's Curry finished with 24 saves in 58:52.
BC will visit Boston University (4-6-2, 3-4-1 HE) on Saturday night in the second half of the weekend series.
Game Notes: Stephen Gionta's second-period goal marked his first of the season ... The Eagles lowered their league-best goals against average to 1.47 ... seven of BC's 11 games this season have been decided by one goal or fewer ... freshman forward Brock Bradford was held off the scoresheet for the first time in seven games.
