Journal 4 - Flight To Adelaide - First Match
January 11, 2005 | Lacrosse
Although our day started at 5:00 a.m., our flight from Sydney to Adelaide was only one hour; quick compared to the odyssey of a few days before. Upon our arrival, Ian, our bus driver, greeted us and drove us to the luxurious Quest Apartments. After settling into our three bedroom apartments, we convened for our first team workout. We started out by taking a short jog through the city of Adelaide, followed by a half hour of stick skills.
After practice, the team came together in one of the apartments and ordered a variety of pizzas. After lunch, it was time to prepare for our first game at 6:00 p.m. The bus was scheduled to leave for Brighton fields at 4:30 p.m., which allotted the team three hours to mentally prepare. At the lacrosse field, we warmed up and before the game were able to exchange gifts with the team of Adelaide club all-stars.
It was a great game where we were able to shake off the rust that had been accumulating since the end of fall ball in October. The Aussies were great competition, with a combination of collegiate All-Americans and Australian National Team members. The Aussies were quick to put in a few goals and continued to dominate field play. However, as the game wore on, we were able to put together several solid stretches of play. B.C. goals were scored by Libby Schuville, Elizabeth Kadison, Susie Breaznell, and Caitlin Swift.
After the game we were invited by our competitors to participate in a long-standing Australian tradition of socializing in the clubhouse. Over refreshments and snacks, we had the opportunity to meet and converse with some of Australia's most knowledgeable and friendly lacrosse players, including Jen Adams. After an hour, Big Mike announced it was time to board the bus and head over to dinner. We ate dinner as a team at a local restaurant, and were happily in bed by midnight.
