Freshman Charlie Davies (Manchester, N.H.) scored his second consecutive game-winner as eighth-ranked Boston College won its first road test and conference game of the year, 1-0, over BIG EAST foe Syracuse.
Davies, last week's BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, hooked up with fellow freshman Johann Helgason (Akureyri, Iceland) to score the contest's lone goal in the 55th minute. Davies took a through ball played by Helgason and touched it over the diving SU goalkeeper. Davies' has scored a goal in each of the first three games of his college career.
The Eagles (3-0-0, 1-0-0) turned in another strong defensive effort to give last week's BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, Issey Maholo (Tokyo, Japan), his third career shutout. Maholo benefited from scrappy play from senior co-captain Pat Haggerty (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and sophomore Sam Brill (Newton, Mass.) out of the backfield and had to save just one shot. The BC defense allowed just five Syracuse (1-3-0, 0-1-0) shots in the game, while the Eagles notched seven, led by Haggerty's two.
Senior co-captain Guy Melamed (Nofit, Israel) was a constant for the BC attack once again. Melamed, on the Watch List for the Hermann Trophy, college soccer's most prestigious award, broke up many Syracuse attacks and was solid throughout the game from his midfield position.
The 3-0 record for the Eagles is the team's best start since 1978. BC will attempt to win its fourth consecutive game when it hosts crosstown rival Boston University on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
