Behind an impressive offensive display, the Boston College men's soccer team powered past crosstown rival Boston University, 2-1, on Wednesday night.
The #6 Eagles (4-0-0) dominated on both sides of the ball, holding BU (0-3-0) to just two shots in the first half. BC put constant pressure on the BU defense and goalie Chad Comroe (Dallas, Texas), firing eight shots in the opening period and connecting on one.
In the 21st minute, senior co-captain Pat Haggerty (Lawrenceville, N.J.) scored on a feed from freshman Charlie Davies (Manchester, N.H.) in front of the goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. It was Haggerty's second goal of the year.
The Terriers had no answer for Davies, who picked up another assist in the second half when he fed classmate Satoshi Mitsuda (Honolulu, Hawaii) in the 53rd minute. The goal was the first of Mitsuda's career and proved to be the game-winner. Davies registered five shots in the contest, increasing his team-leading total to 13. It was the first game this year in which the freshman did not score a goal.
Sophomore Sam Brill (Newton, Mass.) had an impressive game in the backfield, saving BC from allowing an early second half goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Issey Maholo (Tokyo, Japan) was pulled out of the box as he went after a free ball, and was unable to snare it. BU freshman Shane Westbrook (Eureka, Mo.) gained control of the ball and fired a shot. Brill had taken over the net for Maholo and stopped the shot to prevent the goal and preserve BC's two-goal lead.
Maholo, who was named ECAC Goaltender of the Week on Wednesday, was impressive in goal once again. The native of Japan registered four saves and was active outside of the box the entire game.
BU scored its lone goal with just under seven minutes remaining in the game. Junior midfielder John Cooper (Greer, S.C.) beat Maholo to the right to bring the Terriers within one.
It is the fifth consecutive victory for the Eagles over their rival, and they have not lost to BU since 1998.
BC will play the second game of its four-game homestand on Saturday night, when the Villanova Wildcats come to town for a 7 p.m. start.
