Two Boston College pitchers, Joe Martinez and Mike Wlodarczyk, were selected to play in the 42nd annual Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game on Saturday, July 24. After vaulting the Hyannis Mets to first place in the league's West division, both Martinez and Wlodarczyk were named to the West's All-Star team by Cape Cod League coaches.
Martinez, a senior from South Orange, N.J., has proved to be a dependable starter for Hyannis. With just a 1.54 earned run average, Martinez has struck out 45 batters in just 41 innings so far this summer. The All-Star selection comes on the heels of a successful junior season for Martinez in which he saw action as both a starter and reliever for the Eagles. In 52 innings of work, Martinez struck out 56 batters on his way to a 2-4 record.
Wlodarczyk, a senior lefthander from Medford, N.J., has compiled a 3-0 record for Hyannis with an ERA of 1.78. In his junior season with the Eagles, Wlodarczyk tallied a 4-1 record and 35 strikeouts. His complete-game effort against Northeastern in the Beanpot earned him tournament co-MVP honors. The Montreal Expos selected Wlodarczyk in the 15th round in the 2004 Major League Draft.
Considered the nation's premier amateur baseball league, the Cape Cod League had nearly 200 alumni on Major League Baseball rosters last season. Saturday's All-Star game will take place at Eldredge Park in Orleans.
