Cambridge, Mass. - The Boston College softball team won a non-conference single game with Harvard Tuesday afternoon at Soldiers Field, 5-2 in 13 innings. With the win, the Eagles are currently 31-21 overall (9-9 BIG EAST).
Harvard struck first, capitalizing on an Eagle error that allowed the lead-off batter on base. The next batter advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt and Sara Williamson belted an RBI double to right center field for the 1-0 lead in the second.
The Crimson added an insurance run in the third inning. With one out, three consecutive singles accounted for the run and the 2-0 lead.
After going down in order for three innings, the Eagles threatened in the top of the seventh as Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) smacked a lead-off home run to left field, cutting the lead in half. Boston College then tied the game when pinch-runner Sara Kellner (Sarasota, Fla.) scored from second on an error by the second baseman.
With two outs in the 13th inning, Obrest broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out RBI double to left center field that plated Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.), who reached on a walk. Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.,) followed with a single up the middle that scored two more runs for a 5-3 lead. The Eagles then shut down Harvard in the bottom half of the 13th.
Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) got the win on the mound, improving to 12-8.
The Eagles are back in action Thursday when they host Massachusetts in a single game beginning at 5:00 p.m. Boston College will wrap up the home portion of its schedule with a 12 noon doubleheader against Pittsburgh Saturday, celebrating Senior Day for six players.
