Chris Lambert (Manchester, N.H.) struck out a season-high 12 batters, and Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) went 4-for-4 but it was not enough as the Boston College baseball team (29-24, 14-8) fell, 13-10, to host Seton Hall University (16-32-1, 8-16), Friday, May 21, in South Orange, N.J.
The game started out well for the Eagles, who scored three runs in the first inning on a pair of Seton Hall errors, a couple wild pitches, Jason Delaney's triple and Ryan Morgan's (Weymouth, Mass.) sacrifice fly. They added to their cushion in the fifth thanks to another wild pitch and Delaney's RBI single which increased the advantage to four at 5-1. The hosts took one back in the bottom half of that inning then squeezed out five runs in their next chance, the bottom of the sixth, off BC starting pitcher Chris Lambert, who had thrown a four-hitter, fanning 11 batters until that point.
Down 7-5, BC responded in the top of the seventh. Assisted by a pair of Pirate miscues, the Eagles scored four runs off five hits to regain the lead at 9-7 only to have it taken away when SHU exploded for six runs off five hits and two BC errors in the seventh.
The two teams combined for 10 errors in the game and of the combined 23 runs scored, only 12 were earned.
Jake Marsello got the loss for BC, while Seton Hall's Jake Haggerty picked up the win, allowing nine runs - three earned - on eight hits in 7.0 innings. Bryan Haggerty earned the save, not allowing a baserunner in the ninth.
The two teams meet Saturday, May 22, for a single game at 12 noon.
