The Boston College baseball team (30-24, 15-8) combined for 14 hits to overpower host Seton Hall Pirates, 12-5, Saturday, May 22 and clinch a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament, held May 27-29 in Bridgewater, N.J. For the fourth time in his six-year tenure, Coach Hughes has led his Eagle squad to a 30-win season, including their current count of 30-24; and for the third time, BC will appear in the conference tournament under Hughes.
The Eagle offense heated up as they batted around in both the fourth and seventh innings, producing a combined seven runs - all they would need - in those two stanzas. But solid pitching by starter Kevin Shepard also paved the way to victory. Shepard gave up six hits, five runs - only two earned - with six strikeouts and five walks in 8.0 innings of work. His victory today ties him for fourth on BC's all-time career wins list with 19. He is 7-4 on the season.
Senior Josh DiScipio (Schenectady, N.Y.) and sophomore Sean McGill (South Kingstown, R.I,) each had three hits while junior first baseman Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.) knocked in three runs. Three Eagles -- DiScipio as well as Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) and Garrett Greer (Peabody, Mass.) -- drove in two RBIs.
Chris Noonan took the loss for Seton Hall (16-33-1, 8-17); he gave up seven runs, only three of which were earned, and surrendered eight hits backed by a Pirate defense that committed four miscues.
The rubber match of the series occurs Sunday, May 23 at noon.
