Softball Drops First Game Of BIG EAST Tournament

Syracuse, N.Y. - The fourth-seeded Boston College softball team dropped the opening round game of the 2004 BIG EAST Tournament at the Softball Stadium at Skytop on the campus of Syracuse University. The Eagles fell to top-seeded Notre Dame, 4-1. With the loss, Boston College is now 33-24 overall.
The Eagles put the game's first run on the board and led 1-0 through three innings. Boston College struck first when Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) led off with a single. She was followed by back-to-back fielder's choices from Elyse Meredith (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) and a Notre Dame throwing error. Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) delivered an RBI single to plate Macchi.
Notre Dame tied the game at one in the fourth inning on one hit and one error. The Fighting Irish added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits and another Eagle error.
Malandris took the loss on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up six hits. The Eagles matched those six hits, pounding out six of their own.
Boston College will face Villanova Friday at 5:00 p.m. The Wildcats lost to Seton Hall, 3-2, today. Notre Dame and Seton Hall will play at 3:00 p.m.
