Pittsburgh (17-5) topped Boston College (8-16), 7-6, plating the decisive tally in the bottom of the ninth inning, Sunday, in the final contest of the three-game BIG EAST series in Pittsburgh.
The Panthers' redshirt senior pitcher P.J. Hiser worked 7.1 innings on the mound and struck out three Boston College batters, while going 3-for-5 from the plate. Reliever Eli Friedman picked up the win for Pitt, his second of 2004.
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead on Drew Locke's (Weymouth, Mass.) roundtripper, in their first offensive opportunity, the Eagles scored four runs in the final two innings to knot the game at six heading into the bottom of the ninth. Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) smashed a three-run home run, his third long ball of the season then Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.) launched a sacrifice fly to cross one more Eagle run in the next inning.
Junior Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.), who took over for BC starting pitcher Matt O'Donnell (Marlboro, Mass.) in the fifth inning, pitched 4.0 innings of scoreless baseball before yielding the game-winning single to Mike Scanzano with one out in the ninth.
