CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior co-captain Meggie O'Neill (Garden City, N.Y.) tallied a career-high eight points - four goals, four assists - to lead the Boston College women's lacrosse team to an 18-6 win over Fairfield in the 2004 regular-season home finale at Alumni Stadium on Tuesday night.
A total of 11 different Eagles scored goals and 13 players registered at least one point on the night for BC. O'Neill and sophomore Susie Breaznell (Delmar, N.Y.) recorded four goals each while Courtney Legath (Moorestown, N.J.) rounded out the Eagles tallying multiple goals with two.
Freshmen Katherine Wagoner (Glenmont, N.Y.) and Libby Schuville (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) each scored the first goal of their careers. Wagoner netted a free-position shot at 23:38 in the first half and Schuville recorded her tally with 0:15 remaining in the game off a pass from classmate Claire Bowersox (Severna Park, Md.), who also tallied her first collegiate point on the play.
The Eagles opened the match with two quick goals before the match was delayed 1:30 due to lightning. Boston College would add 10 more unanswered scores when play resumed before Fairfield tallied its first goal of the game off a free-position shot from Suzanne Finley. The Eagles added one goal prior to halftime to take a commanding 13-1 lead at the break.
The two teams scored five goals apiece in the second stanza for the 18-6 final. Fairfield opened the final half scoring four of the first five goals while BC responded with a 4-1 run of its own in the final eight minutes of the game.
Tara McKennett (Garden City, N.Y.) recorded 10 saves, including eight in the second half, to earn her fifth win of the season.
Boston College improves its record to 6-10 while Fairfield closes out its 2004 campaign at 4-11.
The Eagles travel to Providence, R.I. to play Brown on Tuesday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. in their last home game of the 2004 campaign.
Game Notes: Playing in their last home game at Alumni Stadium, seniors Meggie O'Neill and Kathleen Gallagher were honored by Head Coach Shari Krasnoo and the Eagles for the contributions to the women's lacrosse program ... Susie Breaznell scored four goals for the second time this season and fifth time in her career. The sophomore has scored six goals once - Mar. 23, 2003 against Villanova - and five goals once - Mar. 4, 2004 against Stony Brook ... Lindsay Cope tallied her first point on the season, assisting on Meggie O'Neill's third goal of the game at 27:20 in the second half.
