Villanova, Pa. - The Boston College softball team bounced back to win the night cap of a twin bill against Villanova on a warm and sunny Saturday at the Villanova Softball Field. The Eagles won the second game, 1-0, after dropping the first by the same score in 10 innings. With the split, Boston College is currently 25-17 overall and 5-5 in the BIG EAST.
Game One - Villanova 1, Boston College 0 (10 innings) Boston College collected only six hits and struck out 12 times in the first game. On two occasions, in the fourth and sixth innings, Boston College put runners in scoring position with less than two outs, but each time the Wildcats turned the Eagles away.
Villanova saw a couple of chances to win the game earlier taken away as well. In the sixth inning, Allie Wisniewski was robbed of an RBI hit on a diving catch by BC centerfielder Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.). Then in the ninth, with two outs and runners on first and third, Robin Flier sent a line drive straight up the middle, which hit off pitcher Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.). Second baseman Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) picked the ball up, and her throw to first was just in time to get Flier and extend the game another inning.
Villanova opened the 10th inning with back-to-back singles and, with one out, plated the game-winner on a line drive to left field.
Game 2 - Boston College 1, Villanova 0 Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) scattered three Villanova hits and helped her own cause with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) also went 2-for-3 for the Eagles, and scored the game's lone run in the first inning on Elyse Meredith's (Basking Ridge, N.J.) sacrifice fly.
Boston College is back in action Sunday when it faces Rutgers in a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader. The Eagles return home April 24-25 when they host Seton Hall (Saturday) and St. John's (Sunday) in BIG EAST action.
