The Boston College baseball team split its BIG EAST doubleheader with #4 Notre Dame (25-4, 7-1), Saturday, April 10 in South Bend, Ind. The 7-4 victory in game one both served as both ND's first league loss of the season and BC's first win over the Fighting Irish since May 13, 2001 when the Eagles beat a then second-ranked ND squad, 7-6. In the nightcap, BC fell to the hosts, 6-4, snapping a four-game Eagle win streak, to move its record to 12-17 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Strong pitching by BC starter, Matt O'Donnell (Marlboro, Mass.), founded game one's victory as the senior right-hander threw a three-hitter through 6.0 innings and completed a six-hit game, allowing no earned runs. He fanned six and walked only two in 7.0 innings of work. Four Eagle batters posted two hits each, combining for an 11-hit Eagle explosion. BC scored in all but three frames, chasing out ND starter Chris Niesel, who surrendered five runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.
Senior Josh DiScipio (Schenectady, N.Y.) belted a two-run home run off of Notre Dame reliever Mike Dury, and Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) also registered a pair of RBI.
Despite a perfect 4-for-4 outing by senior Garrett Greer (Peabody, Mass.)and five Notre Dame errors, BC couldn't overcome the two-point hump in game two.
In the top of the seventh, BC knotted the score at four on RBIs from Marco Albano (Arlington, Mass.) and Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.) but Notre Dame tacked on a pair of runs off reliever Joe Martinez (South Orange, N.J.), the losing pitcher, that made the difference.
Jake Marsello (Lynn, Mass.), BC's starting pitcher, struck out a career high of seven batters in his best performance of the 2004 season. He allowed six hits and walked only two Notre Dame batters.
BC hosts Harvard, Tuesday, April 13. Game time is 3 p.m.
