Junior Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.) drove in all three runs as the Boston College baseball team defeated visiting Harvard, 3-2, Friday, April 16, in Chestnut Hill, Mass. BC improved to 13-17 and has won five of its last six games while the Crimson dropped to 13-10-1.
In the top of the ninth, Harvard threatened by placing a man on third with two outs but freshman Kevin Boggan (Lexington, Mass.) got Zak Farkes to go down swinging to end the game. Two of the three hits that Boggan surrendered came in that final frame when the visitors knocked, including Lance Salsgiver's RBI single to bring Harvard within one run, but the Eagle reliever survived to pick up his first collegiate save.
BC starting pitcher Mike Wlodarcyzk (Medford, N.J.) gave up only one run on six hits through 6.2 innings of work. The junior southpaw struck out six and walked two. Wlodarcyzk, backed by a strong Eagle defensive stand, freed himself of a jam in the fifth inning when Harvard's leadoff batter, Morgan Brown singled up the middle and moved up via a stolen base and throwing error, to third, where he stayed as BC retired the next three batters.
In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Ryan Morgan's deep sacrifice fly to center plated Marco Albano (Arlington, Mass.), who singled and advanced to third on Eric Wright's (Southboro, Mass.) sacrifice bunt and Ryan Leahy's (Salem, Mass.) single. That was one of three hits for Ryan Leahy on the day, extending his hit streak to 11.
Ryan Morgan sparked BC in his first at bat, lacing his first home run of the year, a two-run shot in the first inning.
Javier Castellanos took home the loss for Harvard. He allowed nine hits, three runs - all earned - and struck out four in eight innings of work.
BC hosts BIG EAST foe St. John's for a doubleheader, Saturday, April 17. Game time is 12 noon.
