CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball team split its BIG EAST opener with Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon at Shea Field on the campus of Boston College. The Eagles topped the Hokies, 1-0 in 12 innings, in the first game, but fell 4-3 in the twin bill. Boston College stands at 17-10 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST.
In the first game, the two teams fought for 12 scoreless innings until Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) won the game with one swing of the bat. The sophomore belted a home run to left center field for the win. Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) pitched the complete-game win, striking out 13 while scattering six hits. She improved to 5-3 on the season.
In the second game, Boston College squandered two leads and gave up the game-winning run on a wild pitch. The Eagles pushed a run across in the third to take an early 1-0 lead as Sara Kellner (Sarasota, Fla.) scored after reaching on a double. In the fifth, the Eagles added two insurance runs on a Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) lead-off triple, a Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.), and a wild pitch.
The Hokies would get their first run in the sixth inning, stringing three hits together. They would then score three runs in the seventh inning for the come-from-behind victory. Two walks, a sacrifice bunt, a two-RBI double, and a wild pitch accounted for the scoring.
Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) pitched one inning, suffering the loss on the mound. She falls to 8-6 on the season.
BC will host cross-town rival Boston University Sunday, in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m..
