CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College split a Sunday afternoon doubleheader with crow-town rival Boston University at Shea Field. The Eagles won the first game, 3-1, and gave up four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to drop the second game, 5-3. The Eagles are now 18-11 on the season (1-1 in BIG EAST play).
GAME ONE - Boston College 3, Boston University 1
The Terriers were the first to break into the scoring column, pushing a single run across in the opening inning. BU was right back to scoring in the second frame, loading the bases after a two-out walk. Boston College pitcher Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) avoided trouble with a groundball out.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when the Eagles' bats finally got to BU pitcher Ashlee Freeman. Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) led off the inning with her first career home run to tie the score at 1-1. Freeman then issued two walks on eight pitches. Consecutive RBI singles by Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) and Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) scored two more runs, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Malandris improved to 6-3 on the season. She allowed only one Terrier hit in the final four innings, and no runs in the final six Terrier frames. Macchi was 20for03 on the afternoon.
GAME TWO - Boston University 5, Boston College 3
Both teams scored single runs in the fourth inning. B.U.'s came on a Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) wild pitch that allowed Williams to score from third. Daly worked for that run back, belting an RBI double that scored Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.).
The game would remain tied until the seventh and final inning. BU's Haas ripped a two-RBI double down the left field line that would score two Terrier runs and give BU a 3-1 advantage. Liz Alley followed with a line drive down the right field line that scored Haas to increase the lead to 4-1. Then, Erin McDonald delivered an RBI single up the middle for the fifth run.
BC wasn't finished, despite trailing 5-1. The Terriers replaced Williams with Freeman in the circle, and the Eagles took advantage of the change. Leadoff hitter Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) homered to right center to slash the B.U. lead to 5-2. A walk, single, and fielder's choice later, BC had runners on the corners with one out. With two outs, Mackey singled to center to score one run and make the score 5-3, but the rally was ended with a popout.
Daly was the only Eagle with more than one hit. She was 2-for-3 with an RBI. In the circle, Daly (3-2) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up all five earned runs on eight hits. She struck out five and walked three.
BC hosts Dartmouth Tuesday, in a doubleheader slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
