The Boston College baseball team (6-13-0) defeated host Hartford (2-8) twice by scores of 4-2 and 3-0, Saturday, March 27 in Connecticut.
In game one, junior Kevin Shepard (Andover, Mass.) picked up his second victory of the season, and Mike Gauthier (Salem, Mass.) posted his second-straight save in as many opportunities to lead BC to the 4-2 decision. Shepard scattered five hits through 7.0 innings, striking out six and issuing four walks. With the win, Shepard matched the program's sixth-best career victory mark (15), tying Curt Romboli and Andy Sullivan.
Each pitcher freed themselves of a bases-loaded jam. In the bottom of the seventh, Hartford juiced the bases with no outs only to see Shepard strike out Jeff Jermine and Rick Langer before Matt Denorfia made the final out, grounding into a fielder's choice.
In the last of the ninth, the Hawks threatened again, placing a third man aboard after the second out but Gauthier got Ron Acabbo, who homered earlier in the game off Shepard, to go down swinging for the final out.
BC hitters stroked four extra-base hits in that game, highlighted by Josh DiScipio's (Schenectady, N.Y.) triple that extended his hitting streak to eight games. Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.) got the job done in his first two at bats, poking an RBI single through the right side in the first frame then by delivering a sacrifice fly to deep left field in the third. Eric Wright (Southboro, Mass.) and Joe Martinez (South Orange, N.J.) drove in BC's final two runs.
In game two Chris Lambert and Gauthier combined for the three-hit shutout, BC's first of the 2004 season. In six innings of work, Lambert struck out 11, walked four, and surrendered three hits. He struck out the side in the third inning, accumulating his 200th career strikeout with his fifth "K" of the game.
Juniors Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) and Marco Albano (Arlington, Mass.) powered RBI doubles in the first and fourth innings, respectively, lifting BC to the 2-0 lead. The Hawks did not back down and battled to load the bases in the bottom of the fourth, after Lambert walked the leadoff batter and allowed back-to-back singles. The defense stood tough and Lambert struck out Kyle O'Neill and got the next Hartford batter, Jeff Jermine, to bounce one back to the mound for an inning-ending double play.
A passed ball provided BC's final score in the top of the sixth. The two teams meet Sunday, March 28 for the rubber match to be played at Chestnut Hill. Game time is 1 p.m.
