Eagles and Hawks Meet Again The Boston College baseball team (4-13) travels to Connecticut for a doubleheader against the University of Hartford Hawks (2-6), Saturday, March 27, starting at noon, before hosting the Hawks in Chestnut Hill on Sunday, March 28 at 1 p.m. Hughes' BC squads have only seen action against the Hawks twice with both games played in 2003 and won by Boston College (16-2, 3-2 on March 29), held in Brockton, Mass.
In that doubleheader, two-game starters Ryan Morgan, Drew Locke and Michael Flynn each batted over .500. Three of Ryan Morgan's three of four hits went for doubles in addition to a two-RBI showing while Locke and Flynn each collected three hits and one RBI apiece.
Kevin Shepard and Chris Lambert earned the mound wins for BC. Lambert threw 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts, and Shepard pitched a three-inning, one-hit shutout. He also struck out three.
BC's Last Time Out Drew Locke and Ryan Morgan each stroked a pair of hits to lead Boston College to a 4-1 win over Holy Cross, Wednesday, March 24 in Worcester, Mass.
Joe Martinez hurled a three-hitter through 6.0 innings for the win, allowing one earned run. The junior right-hander issued four walks and struck out three before yielding to reliever Mike Gauthier, who earned his second save of the season, with a three-inning, scoreless pitching effort.
BC scored one run right off the start thanks to leadoff batter, Ryan Morgan, who doubled down the right field line and scored on Garrett Greer's single through the right side.
In the third, BC's advantage swelled to four courtesy of four Eagle hits and one Crusader error. Morgan stimulated the next BC run, singling to left field, and two batters later scoring on Locke's triple to right center. Locke, who also posted a double in addition to that triple, came home on Ryan Leahy's single then Josh DiScipio extended his hitting streak to seven, plating Leahy for the fourth and final run.
Now and Then The current Eagle record stands at 4-13 but similarities exist to the 2003 Eagle team which won eight and lost nine en route to a 33-21 record, second best in the program's history. Last season's team ERA of 4.64 through 17 contests barely surpasses this year's mark of 4.66. Although, the 2003 team swung the bat better, culminating into a .271 team batting average (.235 this year), it also struck out 102 times in 546 at bats as compared to this team's 87 strikeouts in 554 at bats.
BC Notes * Josh DiScipio has hit safely in the past seven games.
*Chris Lambert and Kevin Shepard are climbing the Boston College baseball program's charts. Lambert needs five strikeouts for his 200th career K, he is currently third. With one win, Kevin Shepard will tie the program?s sixth-best career total of 15. He also needs seven strikeouts to match Brian Looney in that career department; he owns 121 now.
