The Boston College baseball team's three-run rally in the ninth inning fell two short as the Eagles dropped an 11-9 decision to Florida International, Sunday, Feb. 29 in Miami.
The Eagles plated seven runs in their final four innings, highlighted by three tallies in each of the seventh and ninth stanzas. Junior Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) and senior Garrett Greer (Peabody, Mass.) each stroked three hits for BC while Greer and right fielder Jake Marsello (Lynn, Mass.) drove in two runs apiece.
Junior Chris Lambert (Manchester, N.H.) took the loss, he left after four innings, surrendering five runs on five hits.
The FIU bats came out hungry as the hitters in the no. three, four, and five holes each had a home run. A 3-0 lead was established in the first frame before BC even got to bat. Dennis Diaz, Cody Jacobs, and Fernando Alvarez each received a free pass added by a pair of stolen bases. Michael Lopez ripped a two-run double to plate Jacobs and Alvarez after Diaz walked home on a passed ball. FIU scored in five of their next seven innings, including a four-run sixth inning which cushioned their advantage to seven (10-3).
After 6.1 innings, FIU starting pitcher Andrew Edwards yielded to the bullpen which was shaken for five runs by BC hitters. Edwards allowed four runs - all unearned - and six hits with four strikeouts to improve to 2-0.
BC continues play in the Homestead Challenge and meets Maine, Monday, March 1. Game time is 7 p.m.
