
Women's Ice Hockey Drops Hockey East Contest To Providence

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College women's ice hockey team fell 2-0 to Providence College (7-4-3, 3-0-0) in an intense contest at Kelley Rink tonight. Christine Moynihan turned away 27 shots for the Eagles in the Hockey East matchup.
Both teams came out fighting in the opening period. BC (3-9-1, 1-5-1) put eight shots on goal, including two from Colleen Harris. Deborah Spillane attempted to put the Eagles on the board midway through the period, but her slap shot bounced off the pipe.
Providence took seven shots on net, including two late in the frame. Moynihan stuffed two consecutive attempts from the Friars to end the first with a scoreless tie.
In the second period both teams had its chances. Sarah Courtney fired five shots on goal. Halfway in the junior broke away from the Friars defense and tipped up the puck from in front of the net, but Amy Thomas was able to make the save. Two minutes later Courtney had another opportunity when she tried to beat Thomas from the top of the crease, again the goalie recorded the save.
Moynihan also came up big in the second. With 10:14 remaining and a scrum in front of the net, she eyed the shot from Sonny Watrous and grabbed the puck for the save. The sophomore turned away six shots in the stanza to leave the Friars scoreless through two.
The Friars came out shooting in the opening minutes of the third. Moynihan completed seven saves in the first three minutes.
At 4:47 into the period, Providence capitalized on a rebound in front of the Eagle's net. Watrous slipped the puck by Moynihan to give the Friars the 1-0 advantage.
The Friars added a power-play goal with five minutes remaining to give them a 2-0 edge.
Defensively, the Eagles played very strong. In the final minutes of the game, the defense was able to keep the puck out of its zone and attack Providence's goal. BC released four shots on goal in the last two minutes but was unable to connect.
Moynihan ended the game with 27 saves for the Eagles and Thomas made 28 saves for the Friars.
BC finished the night 0-for-5 on the power-play, while Providence went 1-for-3 on its chances.
The two teams will close out the home-and-home series on Saturday night at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
