Junior quarterback Paul Peterson completed nine of 15 passes for 110 yards in Boston College's 92-play scrimmage Wednesday evening in Alumni Stadium. The scrimmage was the first of three planned for preseason camp.
"I thought our guys played with a lot of enthusiasm tonight," head coach Tom O'Brien said. "The first scrimmage is always the toughest, because it's the first time we have tackled and the defense is sometimes a little tentative. But overall, I was pleased."
O'Brien said he held out quarterback Quinton Porter as a precaution after the junior complained of a sore knee at the Wednesday morning practice. Peterson took the most snaps, while redshirt freshman Karim El Nokali completed three of seven passes for 18 yards and true freshman Matt Ryan completed two of six passes for 34 yards.
Redshirt freshman Jason Lilly snagged two passes for 51 yards on the night. Junior Joel Hazard had two grabs for 25 yards, while fellow junior Grant Adams also had two catches for 23 yards.
Senior running back Derrick Knight gained 50 yards on six carries and fellow senior Horace Dodd picked up 14 yards on 10 carries. True freshmen Andre Callender, L.V. Whitworth and Jolonn Dunbar, who are vying with redshirt freshman Jeff Ross for the third-string tailback position, got a good look on Wednesday night. Callender carried the ball six times and gained 44 yards, including the longest run of the night, a 33-yarder. Whitworth carried eight times for 42 yards, including one 30-yard run, while Dumbar carried the ball seven times for 19 yards.
O'Brien is hoping to return to the grass fields for Thursday afternoon's practice. Rain has forced the Eagles to practice on the Alumni Stadium turf for all but two sessions thus far. "After it rains, and then the sun comes out, it's like a sauna on the turf," O'Brien says.
The Eagles will practice once on Thursday and Saturday, twice on Friday and Sunday.
