Jamaica, N.Y. - The Boston College softball team collected a pair of BIG EAST wins over St. John's Saturday afternoon at Red Storm Field in New York. The Eagles topped the Red Storm, 8-0 and 5-3. They improved to 31-17 overall and 13-4 BIG EAST with the wins. St. John's fell to 29-27 (8-10 BIG EAST).
In game one, the Eagles took an early lead with three runs in the opening inning. They pushed a single run across in the second and three more in the third. It took a regulation seven inning for BC to post its 8-0 victory.
With two outs in the first inning, Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.) and Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) belted back-to-back homeruns for the 3-0 edge. Fischer's two-run dinger scored Jen Asbury (Livermore, Calif.) who had reached safely with a walk.
In the second inning, BC's bats remained hot as Sara Kellner (Sarasota, Fla.) belted a homer to make it 4-0. BC manufactured three runs on three hits and a St. John's fielding error in the fourth inning. Asbury and Fischer knocked RBI hits while Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) collected an RBI on her groundout to second base. BC's final run came on a Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) sacrifice fly that scored Mackey, who led the inning off with a triple.
Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) pitched the complete-game win and improved to 16-5 overall. She struck out seven and allowed just two hits. Fischer was 2-for-4 for BC with three RBI while Mackey was 3-for-4 with and RBI and two runs scored.
In game two, BC took a 3-0 lead before St. John's got its first run on the board. In the top of the second inning, Mackey and Elyse Meredith (Basking Ridge, N.J.) continued BC's use of the long ball, both smacking homers for the 3-0 advantage.
In the fifth inning, Asbury singled in Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.) and Fischer knocked a sacrifice fly that scored Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) who reached with a single of her own. Mackey was 2-for-3 on the afternoon while Meredith collected two RBI.
Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) pitched the win for the Eagles. In 3.1 innings of work, she struck out five while allowing one run. She improved to 10-7 on the season.
Boston College will close out the regular season with a BIG EAST doubleheader at Seton Hall Sunday.
