BRIDGEWATER, N.J. - Sophomore pitcher Chris Lambert (Manchester, N.H.) was one of three pitchers named to the All-BIG EAST First Team while sophomore rightfielder Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.), sophomore pitcher Kevin Shepard (Andover, Mass.) and junior second baseman Josh DiScipio (Schenectady, N.Y.) also garnered all-conference accolades, the conference announced Wednesday, May 21 at its annual awards banquet.
Locke received a second-team nod while Shepard and DiScipio earned third-team laurels.
With their selections, Lambert and Locke become the first Eagles to earn All-BIG EAST honors in their first two seasons. Lambert landed a spot on the first team while Locke was named a third-teamer last year.
Lambert, the 2002 BIG EAST Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, was masterful throughout the campaign, going 8-2 with a 2.71 earned run average in 79.1 innings. He tied for the conference lead in strikeouts (88), was fifth in ERA, tied for fourth in wins, second in opponents batting average (.216), fifth in innings pitched and second in complete games (7). Lambert went the distance in his last seven outings and won his last four BIG EAST starts, including a one-hitter against Pittsburgh on May 4. Three times this year Lambert was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
Locke hit a team-best .354 with four home runs, 29 runs batted in and 33 runs scored. He led the club in doubles (14), slugging (.540) and on base percentage (.420), and made good on nine of his 11 stolen base attempts. His selection is that much more impressive considering he missed 11 games down the stretch with a wrist injury.
Making his first all-conference team, Shepard went 8-3 with a BIG EAST-best 2.44 ERA in 70.0 innings this season. His ERA also ranks 41st in the country. He tied Lambert and two other pitchers for fourth in the conference in wins and was 10th in innings pitched. Shepard received BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors back on March 17.
Also making his first appearance on the All-BIG EAST Team is DiScipio, the Eagles' leader in hits (63). He batted .317 with two home runs, 20 RBIs and 35 runs scored. DiScipio's run total was second on the club, as were his 13 steals. Probably his most impressive stat was his conference-best 24-game hitting streak from April 3 to May 11.
