Softball Lives To See Another Day In NCAA Tournament

Tucson, Ariz. - The sixth-seeded Boston College softball team upset No. 4 seed Minnesota, 4-2, Friday afternoon in the second game of loser's bracket Friday evening at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium on the campus of University of Arizona. With the win, the Eagles went 2-0 on day two and improved to 35-21 on the season. They will now play South Carolina Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. EST.
BC capitalized on three Golden Gopher errors to put up three runs over the first two innings to take a lead and never give it up. The Eagles withstood a late Minnesota rally over the middle innings to secure the win. Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) collected her 13th win of the season with a super effort in the circle. She scattered seven hits while striking out 12.
BC put two runs on the board in the first inning as Jen Asbury (Livermore, Calif.) and Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) smacked back-to-back singles with one out. Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) delivered a two-out single that scored Asbury and, on a Minnesota throwing error advanced to second. The error allowed Blumfield to score BC's second run. The Eagles added another run in the second when Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) belted an RBI double that scored Elyse Meredith (Basking Ridge, N.J.), who had reached on a single of her own.
After Minnesota scored a single run in the third and fourth innings to cut into the lead at 3-2, the Eagles added an insurance run in the fourth innings. Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) reached on an error and scored when Ferrero collected her second RBI of the afternoon. The freshman was a perfect 3-for-3 with 2 RBI. Mackey finished the game with a 1-for-3 performance and an RBI.
BC will play South Carolina Saturday at 2:30 p.m. EST.
