CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Despite dropping two of three games at St. John's this past weekend, the baseball team still has a chance to claim the fourth and final spot in the BIG EAST Championships, held May 22-24 at Commerce Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, N.J.
After hosting Centenary in single games at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14, the Eagles welcome West Virginia, which is in first place in the BIG EAST, to Chestnut Hill for a three-game series. The Eagles and Mountaineers will square off in a noon doubleheader Friday, May 16 and then play a single game starting at noon on Saturday, May 17.
With the Mountaineers, Notre Dame and Rutgers having already secured their places in the conference tournament, three teams are vying for the fourth and final spot. Virginia Tech sits in fourth with a 14-9 record, followed by BC (11-10) and Pittsburgh (12-11). The two possible scenarios in which Boston College can make the tournament are:
1. BC wins two out of three games against West Virginia, Virginia Tech gets swept by Notre Dame and Pittsburgh wins no more than two out of three games versus Connecticut, or
2. BC sweeps West Virginia and Virginia Tech wins no more than one game against Notre Dame.
Boston College took a pair of games from West Virginia on April 12, 2002 at Shea Field. Both games went 10 innings, with the Eagles winning 5-4 and 8-7. Sophomore Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) had six hits in the doubleheader.

NOTES
24 AND COUNTING
With a hit in each of the Eagles' three games last weekend, junior second baseman Josh DiScipio extended his hitting streak to 24 games, the longest in the BIG EAST this season. The previous long was 22 games, held by St. Johns' Mike Rozema. DiScipio is hitting .396 (38-for-96) during the streak, raising his average from .241 to .324. Three times he perpetuated the streak with a three-hit game, eight times with a two-hit game and 13 times with a one-hit game.
EL FANTASTICO
Since being moved to the bullpen at the end of April, senior right-hander Matt Elfeldt has been Boston College's most effective reliever. In his five relief appearances, Elfeldt has a 1.08 ERA (1 ER in 8.1 inn.), has given up just five hits, and has struck out six and walked none. He picked up his first save of the year in BC's 4-3 win over Pittsburgh on May 3.
GREER GOES YARD
Garrett Greer's third-inning solo home run in the Eagles' 3-2 win over St. John's was the junior catcher's first round-tripper in a BC uniform. He is not a total stranger to the long ball as he hit six in his two previous seasons at Georgia State.
