Cambridge, Mass. - The Boston College softball team posted an eight-inning 3-2 non-conference victory over area rival Harvard Thursday afternoon at Soldier Field in Cambridge. The Eagles improved to 29-17 overall (11-4 BIG EAST) with the win. Harvard fell to 14-25.
Boston College scored two runs in the fourth inning to take an early lead when Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) belted a two-run homerun to left center field. Mackey drove in Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.) who had started the inning with a one-out double down the left field line. Mackey went 1-for-4 with two RBI on the afternoon.
Harvard, however, struck back with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the same inning. The Crimson strung together three hits and a couple of successful fielder's choices for the two-run rally. The score remained notched at two through the regulation seven innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, Fischer smacked a two-out homerun to left field, giving the Eagles a slim 3-2 lead. Fischer finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and the gamewinning RBI. BC played solid defense in the last inning as Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) struck out two batters in the final frame.
Ryan collected the win and improved to 15-5 on the season. She had seven strikeouts in five innings of relief of Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.). Despite not getting the decision, Malandris struck out six in three innings.
Boston College will close out the regular season with a weekend of BIG EAST road games with St. John's (Saturday) and Seton Hall (Sunday).
