Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team collected a 2-0 non-conference victory over state rival Massachusetts Wednesday afternoon at Shea Field in the final home game for BC. The Eagles improved to 28-17 overall (11-4 BIG EAST). Massachusetts fell to 28-13 (9-1 Atlantic-10).
The game marked the final home game in the careers of seniors Jen Asbury (Livermore, Calif.), Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.), Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.), and Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.).
The Eagles pushed a single run across in the bottom of the third inning when Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) delivered a two-out single up the middle that scored Asbury, who had led off the inning with a double.
BC's defense kept UMass at bay, with Ryan collecting five strikeouts over the first 4.1 innings. The Minutewomen would threaten in the fifth inning, loading the bases with one out. Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) came in to relieve Ryan, pitching out of the jam with two consecutive strikeouts. She then struck out the side in the sixth inning and added another in the seventh for six total. In 2.2 innings of relief, Malandris allowed just one hit en route to her first save of the season. Ryan improved to 14-5 overall with the win.
Sophomore Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a one-out homerun down the left field line. Asbury, one of the four seniors, and Mackey were 2-for-3 on the afternoon.
Boston College will close out the regular season with three more games. The Eagles travel to cross-town rival Harvard Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. game. They will then travel to St. John's (Saturday) and Seton Hall (Sunday) over the weekend.
