Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team swept a BIG EAST doubleheader from Syracuse Sunday afternoon at Shea Field. The Eagles topped the Orangewomen 8-0 (5 innings) and 1-0 to improve to 27-15 overall and 11-2 in the BIG EAST. Syracuse falls to 14-22 overall and 4-10 in the conference.
In the first game, Boston College pushed six runs across in the first stanza, capitalizing on six hits and a Syracuse fielding error. With one out, Jen Asbury (Livermore, Calif.) singled and Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) reached on an error. Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.) and Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) delivered back-to-back singles, scoring Asbury and Blumfield. Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.), Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.), and Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.) each followed with an RBI single while Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) scored on a passed ball for the final 6-0 lead.
The Eagles pushed two more runs across in the third inning, expanding the lead to 8-0 and winning in five innings. Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) collected an RBI single while Asbury knocked a sacrifice fly to account for the two runs.
Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) collected the win on the mound, pitching five innings and collecting nine strikeouts while allowing just one hit. The senior improved to 13-4 on the season. Field was 2-for-2 on the afternoon with two runs scored.
In game two, the Eagles scored the eventual game winning run in the bottom of the third inning. The Eagles would again take advantage of a Syracuse fielding miscue as Goodchild led off the inning with a single and later scored on an error.
Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) pitched 5.2 innings for the win. She collected four strikeouts en route to improving to 9-6 on the season. Ryan pitched 1.1 innings of relief, collecting three strikeouts en route to her second save of the season.
