BRADENTON, Fla. - In a game marked by an abundance of offense and sloppy defense, the baseball team beat Valparaiso, 13-11, Thursday night at Wynn Field on the campus on Manatee Community College.
The two teams combined for 10 errors (eight for BC, two for Valpo) and 30 hits (16 for BC, 14 for Valpo).
The Eagles (2-6) went into the ninth with a 13-7 lead, but the Crusaders (2-4) pushed four across in the inning, the big hit being Tyler Lowell's two-out, two-run RBI single off of sophomore Mike Wlodarczyk (Medford, N.J.), which made it 13-10.
After a walk loaded the bases, sophomore Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.) came in to close the deal. He gave Matthew Augustine a free pass, forcing in Valparaiso's 11th run, then struck out Michael Arensdorff to end the game and earn his second save of the season.
In its largest offensive explosion of the season, Boston College scored two runs in the second, three in the third, three in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Included in those runs were the team's first two home runs, both of which were solo shots. Sophomore Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) and Morgan went deep in the third and fourth inning, respectively.
Six Eagles recorded multi-hit games. Sophomore Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) collected three hits while senior Vinny Scavone (Seffner, Fla.), junior Josh DiScipio (Schenectady, N.Y.), sophomore Mike Flynn (Trumbull, Conn.), freshman Shawn McGill (South Kingstown, R.I.) and Morgan had two apiece.
Redshirt junior Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.) drove in three runs, two coming on a fifth-inning single. Delaney and McGill each crossed the plate three times.
Despite not having his best stuff, sophomore Kevin Shepard (Andover, Mass.) got the win, improving his record to 1-1. He gave up five runs (four earned) in five innings while striking our five and walking seven. Valpo's Marc Boggio took the loss.
Boston College looks to make it two in a row Friday, March 7, when it takes on Holy Cross at 3 p.m. at the Bollettieri Baseball Academy.
