BRADENTON, Fla. - Sophomore Marco Albano's two-out, two-run single in the fifth put Boston College ahead, 6-5, and the Eagles would tack on another one to pull out a 7-5 win over Holy Cross on Friday, March 7 at the Bollettieri Baseball Academy.
Just before Albano's at bat, Crusaders skipper Fran O'Brien visited his pitcher, John Dibble, on the mound, but Dibble convinced his coach to leave him in the game, and Albano made him pay, ripping a single through the left side of the infield to drive in senior Vinny Scavone (Seffner, Fla.) and sophomore Mike Flynn (Trumbull, Conn.).
Albano scored the Eagles' final run in the eighth when junior Eric Wright (Southboro, Mass.) squeezed him in from third. In just his second start of the year, Albano went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Holy Cross (1-4) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on Mike Schell's two-run double and Drew Bigda's RBI double. BC got two of those back in the third when a Ryan Morgan's fly ball to left was misplayed by Dan Powers, allowing Wright and sophomore Tom Mackor (Salem, N.H.) to cross the plate.
The Eagles (3-6) evened it up in the fourth. With two outs, junior Josh Discipio (Schenectady, N.Y.) hit a fly ball into shallow center that was dropped by shortstop Erik Kistler, and Albano came around with BC's third run.
Tucker Frawley's two-run single down the right-field line in the fifth gave the Crusaders a 5-3 advantage.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, junior Garrett Greer (Peabody, Mass.) drew a walk, forcing in sophomore Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.) to make it 5-4, setting the stage for Albano's game-winning hit.
Sophomore Joe Martinez (South Orange, N.J.) picked up his first of the season. He went seven innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, struck out four and walked three. Morgan pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his third save in four games.
Sophomore Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) collected two hits for the Eagles.
Boston College goes for three, and maybe four, in a row tomorrow as it takes on St. Bonaventure at 10 a.m. and Valparaiso at 3 p.m. Both games will be played at the Bollettieri Academy fields.
