Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College Softball team won both games of a doubleheader against Providence College this afternoon at Shea Field. The Eagles took the front end of the twin bill with a 6-0 victory and the second game by a score of 3-1. Boston College, (12-12, 2-0) yet to drop a contest at Shea Field, extended their home winning streak to three games with the victories over BIG EAST foe Providence (7-6, 0-2).
In game one, the Eagles led wire to wire getting two runs in both the first and the second innings. Short stop Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) recorded two RBI and added a run scored to lead the Eagles offensively. However, the pitching of junior right-hander Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) set the tone for the Eagles from the start. Malandris recorded a complete game shutout, allowing only two hits in her fifth win of the season. Right fielder Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) scored runs for the Eagles in the first and sixth innings, as well as adding an RBI sacrifice fly in the second. First baseman Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Penn.) and catcher Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) also scored and batted in runs for head coach Jen Finley's squad.
In the second game, Boston College ran into much better pitching from the Friars. Providence right hander Nicole Bartholomew threw five scoreless innings before the Eagles touched her up for three runs in the sixth. Blumfield led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk that was soon followed by two bunts for hits by Fischer and left fielder Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.). With the bases loaded and no outs pinch hitter Elyse Meredith (Basking Ridge, N.J.) roped a two RBI double down the right field line. Meredith would later score on a wild pitch by Bartholomew. Boston College's Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) earned her sixth win of the season despite trailing much of the game after giving up a solo homerun to Providence first baseman Cori Van Dusen in the top of the second inning.
Boston College will be in action tomorrow across town to play a doubleheader against Boston University at 12:00 noon on Sunday, March 30.
