WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) drove in three runs - one on a towering eighth-inning home run - and senior Matt Elfeldt (Delmar, N.Y.) pitched seven strong innings as Boston College snapped a three-game losing streak with an 8-4 win over Holy Cross on Tuesday, March 25 at Fitton Field.
Locke put the Eagles up 1-0 in the top of the first as he tripled to center and scored on a throwing error by the center fielder.
With Boston College (9-9) clinging to a 5-3 lead, Locke jumped on John Dibble's first pitch of the eighth and sent a high blast over the fence in left-center for his team-leading third home run of the season.
One inning later, with BC up 6-4, he nearly put another one out, but his fly ball to left came down on the warning track, and he had to settle for a two-run double.
Elfeldt gave up three runs (all earned) on eight hits while striking out five and walking none. He earned the win to even his record at 2-2 on the year.
In the bottom of the first, Holy Cross designated hitter Jim McCloud's infield single drove in third baseman Joe McCabe to tie it at 1-1.
BC scored three times in the third to up its lead to 4-1. One run each came across on a triple to center by sophomore Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.) and an infield single by senior Matt Lederhos (Weymouth, Mass.), while the third scored on a double play.
Holy Cross (2-8) clawed back, scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth to cut the deficit to 4-3. Catcher Mike Marron's single up the middle plated McCloud, and Drew Bigda's triple to right-center drove in McCabe with the Crusaders' third run.
Junior Josh DiScipio (Schenectady, N.Y.) crossed the plate in the seventh on a run-scoring single by redshirt junior Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.), giving Boston College a 5-3 advantage.
Locke took over from there, driving in the Eagles' last three runs.
Leahy and Locke had three hits apiece on the day. Locke also scored three times, while Leahy and DiScipio each crossed the plate twice. Morgan added a pair of hits.
Boston College heads to New Britain, Conn., on Thursday, March 27 for a 3 p.m. game against 2002 NCAA Regional qualifier Central Connecticut State.
