Columbia, S.C. - The Boston College softball team opened its 2003 season with the Gamecock Invitational at Beckham Field on the campus of the University of South Carolina. On the first day of play, the Eagles dropped a pair of games to No. 19 Georgia Tech (7-4) and UNC-Greensboro (1-0). BC falls to 0-2 on the early season and will face host No. 20 South Carolina Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The team will also face an opponent to be determined in the second game of the day.
In game one, Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.) was 1-for-4 with three runs batted in for the Eagles. Her three-run homer came in the bottom of the fifth inning, spoiling Erin Voelz's shutout and cutting the Yellow Jacket lead to 7-3. Freshman Kim Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) added the fourth BC run in the following inning for the final 7-4 score.
Michelle Daly (Carlisle, Mass.) pitched 1.2 innings and took the loss on the mound. All three Eagle pitchers saw action with Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) pitching 1.2 and 3.2 innings respectively. Malandris pitched shutout ball through the final three innings, striking out 11.
In the second game, Malandris took the loss on the mound, pitching a complete game but allowing a solo home run to Spartan Jennifer Aguilar in the fourth inning for the final 1-0 mark. Six Eagles tallied hits on the afternoon.
After this weekend, BC will travel to Athens, Ga. for the Georgia State Round Robin February 14-16.
