Columbia, S.C. - The Boston College softball team went 1-3 at the Gamecock Invitational to open the 2003 season at Beckham Field on the campus of the University of South Carolina. After going 0-2 on day one, the Eagles rebounded to knock off the 20th-ranked host Gamecocks, 3-2. In the final match-up of the day, the Eagles fell to No. 19 Georgia Tech, 2-1, in eight innings. BC stands at 1-3 on the season.
In the first game of the day, Boston College jumped out to an advantage after three scoreless innings. Jen Asbury (Livermore, Calif.) led off the inning with a double. She then scored on a Lisa Fischer (Coopersbug, Pa.) homerun. It was Fischer's second of the season. Two batters later, Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) collected her first homer of the season with a solo shot to left field for the 3-0 lead.
South Carolina would threaten in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs, but Tekae Melandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) pitched the team out of a bases-loaded jam to hang on for the Eagles' first win of the season. Malandris improved to 1-1 on the season.
In game two, BC took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with three hits. Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) led off with a single to left field. With one out, Michelle Daly (Carlisle, Mass.) doubled in Sara Kellner (Sarasota, Fla.), who pinch ran for Mackey.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the fourth inning on a solo homerun by shortstop Tara Knudsen. They would score the winning run in the top of the eighth behind two hits. Daly (0-2) took the loss on the mound. Mackey and Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) both went 2-for-4 in the game.
Boston College will next travel to Athens, Ga. for the Georgia State Round Robin February 14-16. The team will face Maryland, Drexel, and Georgia.
