CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Women's lacrosse head coach Shari Krasnoo is proud to announce the signing of eight players to National Letters of Intent who will play for Boston College beginning in 2004. Six New Yorkers headline the incoming class of recruits. They are joined by a Pennsylvanian and a Maryland native.
Justine Burr (Northport, N.Y.) is one of the top players out of Long Island, according to coach Krasnoo. The speedy midfielder led her Northport High School team to a 31-11 record over her three-year tenure, and has scored 188 points. For her accomplishments in her sophomore and junior years, she was an All-American and was selected to the New York State National Team. With 54 goals and 33 assists as a junior, Burr was an All-Long Island choice and helped her team win the Suffolk County Championship.
"Justine will bring tremendous speed to our program. She has been recognized as one of the top players on Long Island and we are excited to have her," Krasnoo commented.
Brittany Barry (Garden City, N.Y.) and Jacqueline Fiore (Garden City, N.Y.) are both seniors at Garden City High School and have represented Long Island in the Empire State Games. As a sophomore, Barry was selected to the all-tournament team at the New York State Lacrosse Championships. Fiore was a member of the all-star team at the National Draw, and has been elected captain of the Garden City team for the upcoming season.
Krasnoo is excited to welcome the duo. "They come from a very strong Garden City program. We currently have two former Garden City stars (Meggie O'Neill and Tara McKennett) on the team who have succeeded for us, and we anticipate similar success from these recruits," she said.
A fellow Long Islander, Elizabeth Schuville (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) is a senior at Cold Spring Harbor High. The three-time scholar athlete led her team to the Nassau County League playoffs each year. She concluded her junior year with 59 points, the most on her team that season.
Krasnoo said, "Libby is a very dedicated lacrosse player. She plays year-round with the Yellow Jackets, a prominent Long Island club, and will bring a high level of play to BC."
Krasnoo traveled farther upstate to find Katherine Wagoner (Glenmont, N.Y.), a Bethlehem Central senior. Bethlehem has a 51-5 record in the three years she has played, and has produced two current Eagles, Susan Breaznell and Carley St. Lucia.
"The Bethlehem program produces great talent. We know Katie has been well coached and will bring intensity to our team," Krasnoo said. As a sophomore, Wagoner was a Section 2 Honorable Mention choice. In her junior season, Wagoner came on strong, scoring 75 points (40 goals, 35 assists) as the Eagles' captain.
The sixth New Yorker, Brennan Joyce (Rye, N.Y.) resides in the Empire State, but traveled to Connecticut to attend high school at the Convent of the Sacred Heart. With Sacred Heart, she scored 75 points as a sophomore and 80 as a junior. Both years, she was an FAA All-League first team selection, a NEPSA All-Star and a member of the Lower New England Team. A talented leader and three-sport star, Joyce was the captain of the field hockey and basketball teams and will serve as a tri-captain for her senior lacrosse season. On the lacrosse field, Krasnoo is confident that Joyce will bring versatility to the team.
"Brennan has a fantastic work ethic and has played well with both her high school team as well as at the club level. She is one of those players who can play wherever we need her on the field and will provide us great versatility," Krasnoo said.
Claire Bowersox (Severna, Md.) is in her final year at Severn School in Maryland, where she has excelled on the field and in the classroom. As a sophomore, she registered 64 points, scoring 47 goals and gathering 17 assists. During her junior year, in which Bowersox captained the squad, Severn finished 14-5, getting 25 goals on a .57 shooting percentage from the future Eagle. Current Eagles Sara Carpenter and Jen Gens are also Severn School products.
"Bowersox is a hard worker and a quick, versatile midfielder who has faced top competition both in high school as well as the club level," says Krasnoo.
Jennifer Cowperthwait (Berwyn, Pa.) comes to BC to anchor the team's defense. For three years, she has played in the back for Conestoga High School in Pennsylvania, compiling a 52-3 overall record.
"Cowperthwait comes from a great program in Pennsylvania and will bring great stick work and a love of the game to our squad," believes Krasnoo.
Krasnoo comments, "I am very enthusiastic about the incoming class, I think its one of the strongest to come to Boston College of late, and I am looking forward to working with them."
