BOSTON - Six members of the 2002 Boston College baseball team were invited to play in the 28th-annual New England Intercollegiate Baseball Coaches Association All-Star game at historic Fenway Park. The game will take place at 12 p.m. Thursday, May 30. The game features the University Division (Division I) against the College Division (Division II and III).
BIG EAST Pitcher and Rookie of the Year Chris Lambert received the most votes of any pitcher nominated to play in the game. The freshman completed his first season at the Heights with a 9-3 record and a 2.76 ERA.
Senior Mark Sullivan joins Lambert as one of the six pitchers selected to play on the team. He closed out his career with a 19-7 record, which included a 10-3 mark in 2002. Sullivan led the Eagles in innings pitched (96.2) and strikeouts (94).
First-team All-BIG EAST selection Brian Durkin was one of two designated hitters selected. The senior closed out his career playing in 54 games this season. After a slow start to the 2002 season, Durkin poured it on late to become one of Boston College's most dangerous hitters. He tallied 14 home runs on the season, which led the team in 2002 and moved him into third place on the BC all-time list (28).
Senior Brian Macchi and freshman Drew Locke, who were both named to the third-team All-BIG EAST, were two of six players chosen to play outfield in the game. Unfortunately, Macchi will not be able to play because of a broken knuckle, which he suffered during the regular season finale with Notre Dame. He concluded the 2002 season with 65 hits, 62 RBI and an incredible 24 doubles. Locke played in 45 games this season; however, did not start seeing significant time until junior Matt Lederhos went down with a season-ending injury after the 25th game of the 2002. The freshman made the most of his time, as he recorded a .404 batting average with 57 hits, 16 doubles and 24 RBI.
Junior first baseman Vinny Scavone will join the five others at Fenway Park on Thursday. Scavone, who was named BIG EAST Player of the Week back on March 26, is one of two first basemen to make the roster. He started and played in 54 games this season, finishing with a .287 batting average, 58 hits, 10 doubles, 10 home runs and 42 RBI.
