BLACKSBURG, Va. - Senior Lauren Miller's goal with only 13.2 seconds remaining in sudden-death overtime lifted the Boston College women's lacrosse team to a 16-15 victory over Virginia Tech, on Saturday afternoon at Moseley Field. Miller led the Eagle attack with four goals and six assists and freshman Carley St. Lucia chipped in a career-high five goals. With the win, BC ties its total number of victories from last season, improving to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST this season. Virginia Tech falls to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Both sides were evenly matched and the score would reflect that as neither team led by more than two goals. After Tech scored less than one minute in, BC responded with three straight goals - one a piece from Miller, St. Lucia, and freshman Susan Breaznell - to jump out to a 3-1 lead.
The Hokies would score the next two goals to tie the game, but freshman Courtney Legath and senior co-captain Chrissie DeMichele scored less than two minutes apart to give the Eagles a 5-3 lead. Tech scored three of the next four goals to tie the game at 6-6 at the half.
Miller and Breaznell kicked off the second half with goals less than five minutes in to give BC the familiar two-goal cushion, but the home team responded with three straight goals to take the lead.
The Eagles would not back down and fought back, tying the game at 13 on St. Lucia's fourth tally of the game, and taking the lead on her fifth goal with just 58 seconds remaining in the game. Hokie attack Kate Threadgold sent the match into extra time with a tally at the 20 second mark.
After a scoreless first overtime, sophomore Tara Morley gave BC the lead, just 1:06 into the second extra period. VT responded with a tally with only 1:16 remaining in the period, setting the stage for Miller's heroics.
Breaznell finished with three goals for BC, her seventh straight multi-point game.
For the match, Virginia Tech out shot Boston College 36-28. Freshman goalkeeper Sara Carpenter made nine saves to pickup her third straight win for BC.
The Eagles will return to action on Monday, April 8 against Holy Cross at Alumni Stadium. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
