CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - On Tuesday, senior Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) became Boston College's fifth baseball player to be named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the 2002 season. Durkin and the rest of teammates are coming off a weekend where they won two of three games against conference foe St. John's. More importantly, Boston College stayed tied for the conference lead with Rutgers. Both teams are tied with 13-7 BIG EAST records.
Durkin had a solid weekend for the Eagles, as he went 6-for-11 (.545) from the plate. The senior hit his team-leading eighth and ninth home runs of the season. In Monday's contest with the Red Storm, Durkin ripped a three-run shot to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut the score to 6-5. The Eagles ended up dropping their first home conference game of the season, 8-6 in 10 innings. Durkin also tallied six RBI, scored three runs and had a double over the three games.
The other four players to earn this BIG EAST honor are senior Brian Macchi, junior Vinny Scavone and freshmen Jason Delaney and Drew Locke. The five player of the week awards for Boston College are the most by any team in the BIG EAST. Virginia Tech has received the award on four occasions.
The Boston College baseball team (24-17, 13-7 BIG EAST) is back in action at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday against Ivy League foe Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H.
