CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior co-captain Lauren Miller scored five goals and added three assists to lead the Boston College women's lacrosse team past the University at Albany, 21-3, on Friday evening at Alumni Stadium. Freshman goalkeeper Michelle Lawson made six saves to earn her first career win.
With the win, BC snaps a season-high four-game losing streak and improves to 8-8 on the season. Albany falls to 5-9 with the loss.
Prior to the match, seniors Miller, Chrissie DeMichele, Kelly Boyle and Rachael Tella were honored for their accomplishments over the past four years. Tonight's match was the final home game of their Boston College careers.
The emotional ceremony fired up the home team, as BC raced out of the gates to a 4-0 lead. The Eagles scored four goals in the first 4:27 - two tallies by freshman Carley St. Lucia, one by classmate Susan Breaznell and one by Miller - and did not look back. In what seemed like a shooting gallery at times, BC controlled the play in the attacking half throughout the first frame. The Eagles seemed to take shots at will and found the back of the net often. Eight goals in nine minutes increased the BC advantage to 12-0. Tella's first goal of the game at the 4:22 mark, scored only one minute after freshman Courtney Legath's first, gave the Eagles a 14-0 lead, a score that would hold up at the break.
The second half started out slowly for both sides, neither team getting much offensive production in the first five minutes. At the 25:46 mark, Albany's Allison Beagle broke the scoreless streak, scoring on an unassisted tally. BC would end any hopes of a comeback, however, as Tella tallied her second of the match only two minutes later to give the Eagles a 15-1 lead. The goal was followed by three more for BC - one from freshman Caitlin Bracken, Boyle, and freshman Abby Gotfredson - and the lead increased to 18-1. The Great Danes could only muster two goals the rest of the way as Lawson and the Eagle defense weathered every storm.
For the match, Boston College out shot Albany 45-12. Great Dane goalkeeper Francine Beltempo made 11 saves in the loss.
BC received multi-point efforts from six different players and goals from 11. St. Lucia scored four goals and added one assist and Breaznell scored three goals, improving her goal-scoring streak to 13 games. All four seniors notched goals in the game, Miller scoring five, Tella two and Boyle and DeMichele one each.
The Eagles will return to action on Sunday, April 28 at New Hampshire in the season finale. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
