VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Boston College baseball team dropped the final game of the series to BIG EAST foe Villanova on Sunday afternoon, 3-2, at Richie Ashburn Field. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 22-15 on the season and 11-6 in the conference, while the Wildcats upped their record to 24-16 and 8-8 in the BIG EAST.
Following Saturday's doubleheader where Boston College pounded out 32 hits, Sunday's contest was the exact opposite. The Eagles did not get their first hit of the game until the seventh inning when catcher Jeff Mackor singled up the middle off of Panthers' pitcher Bob Grzenda. Grzenda (5-2) was solid for Villanova, as he went 6.1 innings allowing only three hits, two runs (one earned), two walks while striking out two Boston College batters. Villanova closer James Russell picked up his 12th save of the season, as he shut the Eagles out over 1.1 innings.
For the Eagles, freshman Kevin Shepard (3-2) also had a solid afternoon despite getting the loss. He pitched a complete game for head coach Pete Hughes, as he gave up only five hits, three runs (all earned), one walk while striking out seven batters.
Boston College freshman third baseman Jason Delaney was the only player in the game to record two hits, as he went 2-for-4 with one RBI. His RBI came in a two-run seventh inning for Boston College. Delaney laced a single to center field, which allowed Mackor to score from third base. The other run of the inning was scored by left fielder Brian Durkin when Villanova relief pitcher Adrian Schau was called for a balk.
The other two hits for the Eagles came from right fielder Brian Macchi, who recorded his 20th double of the season, and Durkin, who knocked a single in the seventh inning.
For the Wildcats, their three runs came in the second, third and sixth innings, all of which were one run innings. The three RBIs were recorded by first baseman Rob Cafiero, third baseman Brendan Mannix and catcher Greg Fater.
Boston College is back in action at 12 p.m. Tuesday when it takes on cross-town rival Northeastern in the championship game of the 13th-annual Beanpot tournament at Fenway Park.
