For the first time in school history, two Boston College football players were selected in the first round of the same NFL Draft. Running back William Green was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the 16th pick in the draft, while offensive tackle Marc Colombo was taken by the Chicago Bears with the 29th pick.
The first-round selections in the 2002 draft mark the third time in the last four drafts that Boston College has had a player selected in the first round. Damien Woody was selected in the first round of the 1999 draft (17th by New England) and Chris Hovan was taken in the first round of the 2001 draft (25th by Minnesota).
Green finished his three-year BC career with 2,974 yards on 501 carries. He earned All-America first team honors from The Football News, The Walter Camp Football Foundation and The Sporting News in 2001.
Colombo, a tri-captain for the Eagles in 2001, started the first eight games of the Eagles' 2001 schedule, before suffering a knee injury early in the team's contest against Notre Dame. He missed the remainder of the regular-season slate, but returned to lead the team to a Music City Bowl victory over Georgia.
